Description

Sepahsalar was born in Qazvin in 1243 H and died in Mashhad. In 1298 Before becoming the prime minister of Naser-Aldin-Shah, he was appointed as the ambassador of Iran to several countries including the Ottoman Empire, in which he resided for 12 years. During these years he became acquainted with different aspects of the European modern Civilization.
The enthusiasm created in him was the cause that led him to try and execute reforms, back in Iran. This led to important changes in reorganizing the army, making reforms in the government administrations, judicial laws and improvement of other agencies in Iran.
Sepahsalar was highly educated and experienced in political affairs and the army. He was a true believer of modernism. He earnestly tried to convince Naser-Aldin-Shah to pay more attention to the path that Europe had followed. Sepahsalar succeeded in arranging a formal visit for Naser Din Shah to go to several European countries. During the trip, Naser-Aldin-Shah, for the first time had the chance to perceive the principles that were executed by the law and order. The love for progress and modernity which was aroused in him led him to take his second journey to Europe. On this trip, some of the distinguished people of the court accompanied him. Before their return to Iran, the ultra-conservative and powerful opponents of Sepahsalar had arranged all types of plots, including a made-up famine, against him. The Shah, inspite of his passion for modernity, was unable to continue the prime minister’s plans; particularly, owing to his despotic and individual power that didn’t allow him to advance further. Here, the idea of law and order was doomed to perish. Sepahsalar was removed from office and a conservative by the name of Yusof Mostowfi replaced him.
Years later, the splendid residence of Sepahsalar in the center of Tehran was turned into the first national assembly (The parliament) during the constitutional revolution. The famous Sepahsalar Mosque and the seminary school and library, right in front of his residence, with its glorious architecture is one of the attractions of Tehran. This complex in Baharestan Square is a reminder of Sepahsalars time and his legacy.
Compared with the other paintings of Sepahsalar rendered by the artist Jafar, this painting is most probably executed by him too. In this painting, Sepahsalar is elegantly dressed in full formal uniform. Several medals from different countries are attached to his gown. His hand is on the sword which is elegantly ornamented with gems. On his belt lies a marvelous large emerald.
